About this series
What it measures
The share of credit card balances at commercial banks that are 30 or more days past due (or on nonaccrual) at quarter end.
Why it matters
It shows card borrowers falling behind before balances are charged off.
Common misreads
Delinquent does not mean lost; many borrowers catch up. Rates can fall when banks charge off more balances, which removes them from the delinquent pool. Accounting changes in 2010 (FAS 166/167) brought securitized card loans onto bank balance sheets, so pre-2010 rates are not strictly like-for-like.
