About this series
What it measures
The share of after-tax income that households did not spend on consumption, interest or transfers in the month.
Why it matters
It shows how much cushion households are building or drawing down relative to their income.
Common misreads
It is calculated as a residual (income minus outlays), so it is revised often and sometimes heavily. A low rate does not mean households have no savings; it measures the flow of new saving, not wealth. Comprehensive NIPA revisions restate the whole history.
