About this series
What it measures
Everything the Federal Reserve owns, mainly Treasury securities and mortgage-backed securities, as of each Wednesday. It is published every Thursday in the H.4.1 release.
Why it matters
Changes show whether the Fed is adding to or draining reserves from the banking system through its asset holdings.
Common misreads
A bigger balance sheet is not the same as 'printing money' for spending in the economy; most of the matching liabilities are bank reserves and currency. Week-to-week moves can come from temporary lending or Treasury cash swings.
