About this series
What it measures
Interest the Treasury accrued during the fiscal year on securities held by outside investors (public issues). Including interest credited to government trust funds, the FY2026 total was $1,360.4 billion.
Why it matters
Interest is one of the fastest-growing parts of federal spending and competes with other budget priorities.
Common misreads
Figures are accrual-based and can differ from the cash interest outlays in the Monthly Treasury Statement. The trust-fund portion is money the government pays itself, so headlines quoting the larger total and the public-issues number are describing different things.
