About this series
What it measures
Freddie Mac's weekly average rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages for well-qualified borrowers.
Why it matters
It is the main benchmark for shorter-term fixed mortgages, often used for refinancing.
Common misreads
It is usually lower than the 30-year rate; the lender is exposed for a shorter time. A narrowing or widening gap between the two is normal and is not by itself a sign of anything. In November 2022 Freddie Mac switched the survey to applications data, a method break in the history.
