About this series
What it measures
All money the federal government collected in the fiscal year: individual and corporate income taxes, payroll taxes, excise taxes, customs duties and other receipts.
Why it matters
It is the denominator for judging how heavy any federal cost is relative to what the government takes in.
Common misreads
It is a nominal dollar total, so new highs are routine. Receipts swing with the economy and with tax law; a single year can fall even as the long-run total grows.
