About this series
What it measures
How much the prices of a broad basket of goods and services bought by urban consumers changed over the past 12 months. It uses the not seasonally adjusted index, which BLS uses for its headline 12-month change.
Why it matters
It is the most widely followed U.S. inflation gauge and is used to adjust Social Security benefits, tax brackets and many contracts.
Common misreads
A lower inflation rate shows prices rising more slowly, not falling. The 12-month figure moves with what happened a year ago as well as with this month's change.
