About this series
What it measures
The 12-month change in consumer prices excluding food and energy, using the not seasonally adjusted index.
Why it matters
Food and energy prices swing a lot month to month, so core is often used to see the slower-moving part of inflation.
Common misreads
Core is not 'inflation without the things people actually buy'. It still covers most of the basket, including rent and services; it just leaves out two volatile categories.
