About this series
What it measures
The percent change in output per hour worked in the nonfarm business sector from the same quarter a year earlier, seasonally adjusted. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it quarterly in Productivity and Costs, with preliminary and revised estimates for each quarter.
Why it matters
Comparing with a year earlier smooths much of the quarter-to-quarter noise in productivity data.
Common misreads
It is a different figure from the annualized quarterly rate in the same release, and the two can differ a lot. It is revised as BEA output data and hours data are updated.
