About this series
What it measures
Job openings as a percentage of total employment plus job openings, seasonally adjusted. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it monthly in the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey; the latest month is preliminary.
Why it matters
BLS calls the job openings rate an important measure of job market tightness, parallel to unemployment measures. As a rate, it stays comparable as the workforce grows.
Common misreads
The denominator is employment plus openings, not the labor force, so it does not line up with the unemployment rate. It is rounded to one decimal, so many months share the same value, and the latest month is revised.
