About this series
What it measures
A diffusion index: the percentage of New York State manufacturers reporting that general business conditions improved minus the percentage reporting they worsened, seasonally adjusted. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York surveys manufacturing executives each month and usually publishes mid-month. The headline is the general business conditions index; it can range from -100 to 100.
Why it matters
It is among the first regional factory surveys published each month for the current month.
Common misreads
It reflects a small sample of firms in one state and swings widely month to month. It counts how many firms said up versus down, not how much, and zero is the dividing line. Seasonally adjusted history is revised each January.
